Metamorphosis I (M1) is a living landscape — one that endlessly translates, scales, and rotates its elements through time. Where static digital art fixes attention on a final result, M1 places the transformation itself at the center, layered with subtle details that reward close observation. The work is designed to be experienced live, through its interactive controls. It can be explored online via Highlight.xyz. Metamorphosis I was commissioned and supported by FingerprintsDAO.

The animation is structured around the concept of a perfect loop — a sequence that repeats seamlessly, with no discernible beginning or end. M1 introduces a quiet subversion of this idea: while the looping sequence itself remains fixed, its entry and exit points shift with every iteration. The result is a system perpetually in repetition, yet never exactly repeating.

Ethereum blockchain traffic

M1 also functions as a visualizer of Ethereum network traffic. When enabled via the parameters, the pace of the animation responds to the state of the network — moving faster during quiet periods, and slowing as activity builds.

Inspiration

I have always been fascinated by paradoxes, infinity, and self-reference. Few have accomplished as much in the visual arts on these topics as M.C. Escher, one of the most well-known and inventive Dutch artists. M1 is heavily inspired by his fantastic creations, and particularly his homonymous trilogy.
