Overview

4 is a contemporary dance work choreographed by Guy Weizman and Roni Haver from Club Guy and Roni for tanzmainz, the contemporary dance ensemble of the Staatstheater Mainz. Weizman and Haver — known for combining powerful choreography with vivid imagery — created the piece as part of their long-term residency with the company, where they developed some of their most acclaimed work.

Music

I was commissioned to composed the score for 4. The music took the form of an electronic mix built around deliberate contrasts — weaving together disparate references including Johann Sebastian Bach and Johnny Cash. Rather than providing a unified sonic backdrop, the score worked as a counterpoint to the movement, using the tension between its sources to heighten the choreography's emotional range.

A special surround system to provide the audience with a level of immersion that is unusual in such performances was an additional touch we decided on. This consisted of an array of 12 speakers from where sound was diffused creating distinct sonic movements across the hall. I developed the music taking this into consideration and using my own software tools to make full use of the sound setup.
